Institute of Gender and Health: Gabriel Bastien nominated Trainee Leader at the CRCHUM

The Trainee Network of the Institute of Gender and Health, one of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, has nominated Gabriel Bastien as one of its representatives at the CHUM Research Centre (CRCHUM). This is a first in the history of the Centre.

A biomedical science doctoral student in the laboratory of Dr. Didier Jutras-Aswad, Bastien is currently studying the management of depression in opioid users.

Working as part of the Trainee Network, a network of undergraduate- to post-doctoral-level students at educational institutions across Canada, he will promote contacts between new and future Canadian researchers interested in sex- and gender-based analysis (SGBA) in health research.

“I’m extremely pleased to be part of this initiative. Sex- and gender-based analyses have the potential of improving the health of all people, especially women and LGBTQ+ individuals, who have been largely left out of research for years. It’s high time we promoted health equity and I am honoured to be able to contribute through this position in the Institute of Gender and Health,” affirmed Bastien.

Although there are many similarities between men, women, girls, boys and people of different genders, the fact remains that the differences, highlighted by a growing number of studies, have to be taken into account when it comes to health and well-being.

For example, gender and sex have an impact on a person’s chances of developing certain diseases, on disease symptoms and severity, and on visits to healthcare institutions.

“Vigorously promoting the principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in our research community is a full-time commitment. It is a priority for our research centre. We adopt best practices in this regard for an even fairer, more equitable CRCHUM,” stated Vincent Poitout, Scientific Director of the CRCHUM and Director of Research at the CHUM.

To find out more about SGBA, interactive online training modules are available on the Canadian Institutes of Health Research website.
